Start looking for a wedding cake about three months before the wedding. Check if the cake will be freshly baked for you, or if it will be a frozen cake, whether it is custom made or pieced together with pre-baked pieces.
Rich Fruitcake is still the traditional type of cake, but nowadays anything goes from chocolate, vanilla sponge, cheesecake, to even an ice cream cake. And there is no law that says you have to have a round or square shaped cakes! One could even have a tower of cupcakes or profiteroles instead of a cake.
Normally at the coffee stage of the meal the MC will announce that it is time to cut the cake. The bride and groom cut the first piece together both holding the knife, then the caterer or whoever is appointed for the task will oversee cutting the rest and distributing it to the guests.
